Surveys in 2009

An assessment of heritage values and vulnerabilities in the Klimapark area took place in 2009.

Artefacts from the Viking Age and earlier were collected when the snow from last winter had melted in August. More than 500 artefacts from the Iron Age were found during the survey along the front of the Juvfonna ice patch.

At the same time investigations of the vulnerability of wildlife and plants in the Klimapark area were conducted, together with assessments of permafrost and soil.

Georadar-mapping of the Juvfonna ice patch took place in October. The geo-physical mapping showed a maximum depth of the ice patch at nearly 20 m.

The surveys are now completed. However, it is important that visitors to the Klimapark do not collect material still remaining in the area – neither artefacts nor remains from plants or wildlife.
